Whale watching is known as a soft adventure, meaning it’s low-risk, family-friendly, and perfect for all ages! These tours are a wonderful way to connect with the ocean and experience marine wildlife. While whale watching doesn’t require much effort from guests, bringing the right gear can make your adventure even more enjoyable.
Dress in Layers
Our number one recommendation: layers, layers, layers! Even on sunny days, it can feel much cooler out on the water – especially if you plan to spend lots of time on the outer deck on the Ocean Cruiser or aboard our Zodiac. These are the items we recommend wearing:
- Sweater
- Warm jacket
- Long pants
- Warm socks
- Waterproof or rain gear if rain is in the forecast
- Close-toed shoes
No matter which vessel you choose, close-toed shoes are always the best option when out on the water. Comfortable shoes with good grip will help keep you warm and steady onboard.
Don’t Forget Sun Protection
The cool ocean breeze can be deceiving! Because the wind keeps us feeling cool, many guests don’t realize how much sun exposure they’re getting – especially with sunlight reflecting off the water.
Be sure to pack:
- Sunglasses
- Sunscreen
- A hat for extra protection
- We recommend bringing drinking water and a few light snacks for your comfort. Complimentary hot beverages are served onboard the Ocean Cruiser, but it’s always nice to have a few extra goodies on hand for the adventure.
- We also offer a small cash pantry with premium water, protein bars, and granola bars available for purchase ($5 per item).
Binoculars & Cameras
Binoculars can be a great addition to your tour, especially for spotting wildlife in the distance or getting a closer look at whales, seabirds, and other marine animals.
You are also welcome to bring your camera! We do offer a free photo package onboard Muarader IV, however if you enjoy photography, there are plenty of great opportunities for wildlife photography.
Most Important: Bring Your Sense of Adventure!
Every whale watching tour is unique, and no two days on the Salish Sea are ever the same. Come prepared, stay comfortable, and get ready to make unforgettable memories out on the water!
