Race Rocks Lighthouse & Ecological Reserve
Race Rocks Ecological Reserve

What an incredible day!  With brilliant sunshine and on a glass flat sea we were able to find several families of the Transient Orcas that were approaching Race Rocks at the eastern end of Juan de Fuca Strait.  Race Rocks lighthouse is the second oldest in southern British Columbia having gone into operation in December 1860.  Race Rocks is also an Ecological Reserve protecting colonies of seals and sea lions as well as many bird species.  The Transient Orcas were here to hunt.  Mount Baker is the active, glacier covered volcano that can be seen in the left of the photo.  The mountain is 10,781 feet (3,286 meters) and was more that 70 miles (120 km) away from us.
