FEB 9 2016 – WOW, What a day! Ian and our new Skipper Darren found a group of Transient Killer Whales hunting Seals and Sea Lions just east of San Juan Island.
The day started off perfectly. There wasn’t a cloud in the sky and the sun was splitting the stones! The water was flat calm and you could see for miles. Captain Ian had heard of many Whales heading east towards Lopez Island so that’s where he headed. When they got on scene they found a group of 5 or 6 Transient Killer Whales hunting pinnipeds! The Whales made at least one kill while our passengers watched in awe. There was a slick seen on the surface of the water and the birds came down to pick up the scraps of whatever critter was unfortunate enough to bump into these top predators. After watching these Killer Whales for about an hour, Ian and Darren headed back by Whale Rock where they saw scores of Steller Sea Lions, some Harbour Seals and a pair of mature Bald Eagles. It was a great day for a Wildlife trip and a bonus to see Whales on a sunny day in February!
