Today we encountered the T2Cs in the Strait of Juan de Fuca, east of Trial Island. T2C Tasu and her offspring are descendants of T2 – Florencia/Pointednose Cow who was captured to be sold to an aquarium in 1970. Florencia and the whales she was captured with deteriorated for months because they were only fed salmon. It was not known at that time that there were orcas that only ate marine mammals. They were the first catalogued transient orcas.

After 7 months T2 Florencia and T1 Charlie Chin escaped thanks to a person weighing down the nets of the sea pen they were stuck in. T2C Tasu is the youngest offspring of T2 Florencia who lived until 2009.

We were also lucky to see a humpback whale!
