The term “superpod” refers to the awesome phenomenon where different family groups of dolphins aggregate together, normally where food is abundant. Today we had the privilege of viewing a superpod of Transient Killer whales. It was tricky to count exactly but the skipper reckoned there could have been up to 50 individuals in the one area! Everywhere you looked black fins popped out of the water. It truly was an exceptional experience.

Our luck continued and by Race Rocks Ecological Reserve we came across 3 Humpback whales! It was a great contrast to see these gentle giants surfacing and going on their deep dives. A two species trip with multiple individuals representing each. If anyone was curious as to whether or not whales are still around at this time of year our encounter confirms – YES!
