Aug 2 2018 – Killer Whales & Humpback Whales were the highlight of today’s tour!  August in Victoria, BC is high season for Whale Watching and a perfect time to enjoy a tour on the Ocean with your family and friends.

This morning we had a great trip.  Shortly after leaving Victoria Harbour we heard there were Killer Whales south of Race Rocks about 25 kilometres west of Victoria.  On the way we saw the blow of a Humpback Whale so stopped to look at it before continuing towards the Killer Whales.  Much to everyone’s delight the whale came up beside the boat as we drifted with our engines off.  For the next 10 to 15 minutes we sat still as the whale continually surfaced next to the boat – getting some passengers wet with it’s blow.  Eventually the whale moved off and we continued towards the Orcas.  When we got there we saw it was members of J pod, one of the resident (fish eating) pods that frequent the waters around Victoria.  The whales were members of the J17 family led by matriarch J17 (Princess Angeline).  They were spread out over a large area hunting for salmon, their main prey item.  After getting good views of all members of the family we headed home slowing once to see another Humpback.  Altogether a successful morning of whale watching.
