J Pod Male Whale
J Pod Male Whale

MAR 12 2016 – What a day!  We spent all day with J Pod, one of our Southern Resident Killer Whale pods. We headed east today into Haro Strait and came across all of J Pod milling for food.  These critters are typically far out to sea at this time of year following Chinook Salmon, however, sometimes they visit Victoria in the off season and surprise our Captains and guests!  These Whales do not migrate, they go where the food is.  We saw them at least once each month over the winter which tells us we still have Salmon in our waters good enough for our Resident Pods 🙂 This is great news for the sustainability of these amazing animals.  Not only did we see Killer Whales today but we also saw some large Steller Sea Lions feeding on Salmon at the surface of the water and some cute Harbour Seals.  It was another great trip on the water!
