It was another beautiful day on the water. Both morning and afternoon tours saw Humpback Whales ‘Heather’ and ‘Raptor’.

Humpback Whales are frequenting our waters on their way North to the feeding grounds off Alaska. They generally spend their winters in warm tropical water near Mexico and Hawaii. The warm water is good for giving birth and breeding, however there is essentially no food due to a lack of nutrients in the warm tropical water.

Up North, cold nutrient rich waters support a variety of plankton, including krill, which Humpbacks eat. The plankton also feed large schools of small bait fish, another food of choice for Humpbacks.

Humpbacks weren’t the only animals we saw on the tours. Harbour Porpoises are usually quite shy, making them difficult to photograph. However, this time there were several Harbour Porpoises and calm ocean conditions which made snapping a photo relatively easy.

Overall it was an awesome trip full of marine life. In addition to the marine mammals we also saw some marine birds. One of our zodiac passengers shared her experience with us after the tour.

“Thanks to Ian and Alex for an amazing zodiac ride this morning! Such a great way to see up close Humpbacks, Sea Lions, an Eagle, and a Turkey vulture! Nature is totally majestic.”

Happy passenger aboard our Zodiac, StrongTide, with Captain Ian and Skipper-in-Training Alex.

We agree! Nature is totally majestic!
