A DAY OF HUMPBACK WHALES

August 13 2018 – It was a day of Humpback Whales today.  This morning we headed SW towards Race Rocks, an ecological reserve with abundant wildlife.  On the way we found two Humpback Whales feeding.  After many good views of these two giants we headed to Race Rocks where we saw California Sea Lions, Steller Sea Lions, Harbour Seals and numerous marine birds.

In the afternoon we were back out in Juan de Fuca Strait looking for Humpback Whales.  It didn’t take long to find one, and then another, and another.  In the end we saw 8 different Humpbacks including 4 feeding in one area.  On the way back to Victoria we stopped to pull up some Bull Kelp, a seaweed that can grow to over 30 metres (100 ft) in one summer and is used in many everyday items like toothpaste, lipstick, ice cream, yogurt, marshmallows, soap, hair conditioner, cough medicine, cake batters and many more.

Our Marine Biologist aboard the Marauder IV, Gord Green, took some awesome pictures from today’s trip and you can find them along with some other awesome stories on our Facebook Page

J50 and the rest of the Southern Resident Killer Whales are endangered and need our help now.  Keep up with all of the stories on our Latest News Page!
