August 16, 2015 – It was a gorgeous afternoon when Marauder and two of our Zodiacs headed off towards San Juan Island. The reports coming in were of Resident killer whales way up near the North end of the island, meaning we would have a bit of a journey getting there. But with the sun shining down everyone was happy out on the water!
When we got on scene just off Spieden Island (north of San Juan Island), we saw that there was a lot of animals grouped together with lots of splashing going on. A massive dorsal fin rose out of the water, it was Crewser, one of the big males from L-Pod! All of a sudden, his tail came out of the water and slapped the water hard, sending up water in every direction. Then, another whale did a big tail slap followed by a spyhop. Soon, we saw 3 or 4 whales breaching, with some of them really launching themselves clear out of the water. It was spectacular! All the members of L-Pod were also surfacing all at once, really showing how close of a family they can be. We spent quite a bit of time with them, and as we were leaving they said goodbye with some pectoral slaps and few more breaches.
It was a perfect day of whale watching!
