We were absolutely delighted today to encounter Big Mama on this glorious morning. After the whaling industry devastated humpback whale numbers, the Salish Sea went many decades without any sightings of the species. Big Mama was the first humpback whale to make these waters her home again in 1997, and since then has brought back numerous calves and a great many of her friends! Now a great-grandmother, it’s wonderful to see that she is still thriving here in BC. Later, we were also lucky to see Ollie the sea otter, harbour seals, and pigeon guillemots at Race Rocks!
