Slick and her baby

July 7, 2015 – Captain Bill and Marauder along with Skipper Stu on Riptide went out this morning with reports of Resident Killer Whales near San Juan Island. The sun was shining through the smoky haze but it was nice and warm. Everyone was excited to see some whales! Surprisingly, the whales ended up being much closer than expected! Mike, Slick and her calf and some other females from J-Pod were swimming very slowly and were quite relaxed. We spent a great hour with our favourite whales, watching them do some tail slaps, spyhops and a few spectacular breaches.
The afternoon trips had all 3 of our zodiacs as well as Marauder catch up with both J-Pod and K-Pod just off the coast of San Juan Island. They seemed very intent on fishing swimming back and forth up and down the Island, they must have been hungry! Everyone got a great view of Scoter, the big male in K-Pod. The whales did some great tail slaps and porpoising. On the way back, we got to see some Harbour Seals being lazy on the rocks of Chatham Island.
The season is just getting better and better!
